Aging-in-place remodeling: making your home safer after rehabilitation
By Blossom Home Improvement ·

Coming home after a stay in a rehabilitation facility is a big step. A home that worked well before may now have obstacles: a high tub wall, a dim hallway, a step at the front door. Thoughtful aging-in-place modifications can help create a safer, more comfortable environment for a patient returning home and for the family supporting them.
Safer bathrooms
The bathroom is often the first room to consider. Useful updates include grab bars, curbless showers, handheld showerheads, shower benches, non-slip flooring, and comfort-height toilets.
Easier entry and movement
Getting in and around the home should feel manageable. Ramps or no-step entrances, handrails, wider doorways, and fewer thresholds can make everyday movement simpler, especially with a walker or wheelchair.
Better lighting
Brighter, even lighting helps reduce shadows and missteps. Under-cabinet lights and motion-activated lights in halls, bathrooms, and entryways are practical ways to light the path, day or night.
More accessible kitchens
Pull-out shelves, easy-to-reach storage, lever-style handles, and space to approach counters while seated can help make the kitchen usable again.
Safer stairs
Secure handrails on both sides, better lighting, and high-contrast step edges make stairs easier to see and use. In some homes, a stair lift may be worth considering.
Simpler controls and hardware
Small changes can make a big difference: lever door handles, rocker light switches, reachable outlets, and smart controls for lights or temperature.
Less tripping risk
Remove loose rugs and clutter, secure flooring, and create smooth transitions between rooms to reduce the chance of a trip or fall.
Plan around the person and the home
The right changes depend on the person and the home. It can help to plan around daily routines and consider an occupational therapist’s home-safety assessment before choosing modifications.
